Vince Gironda Bent-Over Lateral Raise

A "blink and you miss it" capture I'm afraid of Vince Gironda training Roger Stewart on bent-over lateral raises.

Added some screenshots towards the end.

This does build muscles well,BUT, it's a risky move dont you think?

The risk of shoulder impingement is a real risk with the lateral raise. This is impacted greatly by each individual's anatomical structure - genetics. Some people are at greater risk. I recommend that when doing lateral raises that people use and externally rotated grip (thumbs facing the ceiling).

This rotates the greater tubercle of the humerus out of way to a large degree and reduces the liklihood that it will impinge on the coraco-acromial ligament or other structures surround the shoulder/rotator cuff.
If people insist on using a neutral grip (palms facing floor in top position) I recommend that they keep the level of the hand below shoulder height (90 degrees) to try and reduce impingement and rubbing of the rotator cuff tendons.

Just my $0.02.

The problem with the thumbs up rule is that it does hit the anterior head the most not the lateral.

Having said that... I agree on this: "If people insist on using a neutral grip (palms facing floor in top position) I recommend that they keep the level of the hand below shoulder height (90 degrees) to try and reduce impingement and rubbing of the rotator cuff tendons."

What I have found most effective in hitting the lateral head is putting your upper body in a 60°-70° forward angle and perform them like Vince taught them.

You've got a point though IF we're talking bent over laterals. The rear deltoid has maximum contraction if you try to rotate your thumbs towards the ceiling at the top of the movement.

However when standing up doing laterals the same move hits the front deltoid.
