Possessing beautifully sculptured abdominal muscles and a small, muscular waistline is the key to having a quality muscular physique.
Certainly no other single bodypart, when developed fully, does so much to make the rest of your body look better and gives you that hard, athletic, finished look to your physique.
When your waistline is smaller, it not only makes your shoulders look wider, increasing your V-shape and taper but also makes your upper and lower body look larger and more impressive. And when your abs are in shape, the rest of you is more muscular too!
Good abs are also needed and important for health reasons too. Abdominal exercises not only tighten and tone the waist but improve your posture, help with digestion and elimination and keep the internal organs healthy.
I have a reputation for having great abdominal development. I built the foundation for my abs in fitness classes 1 attended in school as a teenager in Egypt. I performed situps literally by the thousands!
While my peers were trying to find ways to skip the exercise classes, I always attended, and in fact, I'd do extra work on the exercises at home too. Thus I inherited a well-shaped waistline and this enabled me to do well in my early contests.
Ab work is not as exciting as working arms or pecs, but the nice thing is that once developed, they are fairly easy to maintain. They may get covered over by a layer of fat, but the basic development is always there and you just have to burn away the fat to get them to show.
Due to all that early work I did for my abs and my genetics, my abs respond so fast that I now do very little direct work for them except just prior to a contest, and most of the time, I do no direct work for them at all. This is a nice luxury as it allows me to spend more time on other bodyparts.
But if your genetics are not as good as mine or if your genetically predisposed to having a heavy waistline or have just allowed yourself to get out of shape, then you are going to have to put a lot of effort to keep your waist in good shape.
It will take perserverence but in the long run, all the hard work will pay off and you will be rewarded with a nice set of abs.
